Quick Builds for Every Monk Subclass in D&D 5e

Way of the Ascendant Dragon:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe(whichever you are proficient with)

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

19th: +2 Wis

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows. If you are attacking a group of enemies you can throw in your Breath of the Dragon feature as well.


Way of the Astral Self:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon.

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe(whichever you are proficient with)

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

19th: +2 Wis

Subclass:

Even though our subclass lets us attack with Wis I think we’re going to be better off ignoring that benefit and using Dex with our Dedicated Weapon.

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows.


Way of the Drunken Master:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe(whichever you are proficient with)

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

3rd: Water Whip

6th: Clench of the North Wind

11th: Flames of the Phoenix or Ride the Wind

17th: River of Hungry Flame or Wave of Rolling Earth

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows or your Elemental Disciplines when they’d be useful.


Way of the Kensei:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon/Kensei Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe

-Longbow

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

19th: +2 Wis

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows and Sharpen the Blade. Use Agile Parry on turns you want better defenses and Deft Strike when you crit.


Way of the Long Death:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

Tactics:

Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows. Just make sure to save some Ki Points for Mastery of Death once you have it.


Way of Mercy:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Way of the Open Hand:

2: Wis

Feats:

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows and apply one of the effects from Open Hand Technique.


Way of Shadow:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe(whichever you are proficient with)

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

19th: +2 Wis

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows or Pass Without Trace to surprise your enemies.


Way of the Sun Soul:

Race:

Mountain Dwarf if you can change your ability score bonuses to Dex and Wis with Tasha’s. If not go Wood Elf. The Main thing we want is proficiency with a d10 weapon to use with Dedicated Weapon

Ability Scores:

1: Dex

2: Wis

3: Con

Equipment:

-Longsword or Battleaxe(whichever you are proficient with)

-Daggers/Darts

Feats:

4th: +2 Dex

8th: Slasher or +2 Dex(get to 20)

12th: Resilient: Wis or Con

16th: Crusher or +2 Wis

19th: +2 Wis

Tactics:

Attack as many times as you can with your weapon and unarmed strikes. Focus fire on the same enemies as your party. Use Stunning Strike if you think an enemy has low Con but you’ll usually want to spend your Ki on Flurry of blows. You can also throw in Searing Arc Strike or Searing Sunburst if you can hit multiple enemies with them.
